Reading Notes: Week 2 Anthology

These notes are from The Man in the Moon from the Myth-Folklore Anthology. It's by Katherine Neville Fleeson and originally comes from Laos Folk-Lore.

Lunar calendar 14 august

  • I like the simple nature of this story. There is nice repetition in the lines, and the story follows a nice pattern.
  • It's mostly a conversation between The wise man and the Man.
    • Is the wise man a god?
    • He seems to have the power to change the man into anything he wants
    • Maybe he tricks the man into being the moon-- maybe he needed to fill the spot or something lol
  • However, I don't like the reasoning behind the man in the moon.
  • What if the man had a better reason to end up in the moon?
  • In this story it's more of a punishment, for not appreciating his life.
  • I wonder if I change the story slightly to make it a love story (I love those the most lol)
    • If I did this, the man and the ocean would be the main characters
    • Maybe the man is far from the ocean and wants to see her everyday
    • The only way to do this is to keep watch of her from afar (in the sky)
    • When the moon is full, the ocean reaches for him, but can't quite reach
    • That's probably already a myth, but maybe it'll be cute!
  • I need a way for the ocean and the man to meet (maybe as a young child he played in the waves)
  • OR THE OCEAN USED TO BE UNTAMED AND WILD, BUT SETTLED DOWN WHEN SHE MET HER LOVE. WHEN HE DISAPPEARED AGAIN SHE RAVISHED THE WORLD IN ORDER TO SAVE THE EARTH (and be with his love) THE MAN DEDICATED HIS LIFE TO THE OCEAN AND WATCHES HER FROM THE MOON.
    • That's my story i guess. I need to look up more things about the moon/ocean
      • when does the tide come in? when does the ocean get crazy? is it without the moon or when the moon is fullest?

Week 15 Extra Credit Reading: Lang's Fairy Tales II, Part A

These notes are based off Blue Beard which is from The Blue Fairy Book by Andrew Lang (1889).  This is a story that I've seen referenced, but I've never read it myself! It was scary. I thought the bride was going to die. She honestly got lucky I don't like that it was her brothers that saved her If I rewrote it, I would make her fight Blue Beard, or outsmart him somehow Maybe she could hide in the bloody closet and pounce on him Also, she could've just run away after she found out! Anyway, so Blue seems like a pretty sweet guy.  He has an ugly blue beard, so no one wants to marry him. They are also weirded out because a bunch of his old wives have gone missing (clue), which is fair However, with all his money, he is able to woo a new bride He went away on a trip, and gave her all the keys to his mansion She can open all the doors BUT not the secret closet (familiar rule...) She obviously goes into the closet and sees dead women. There are bodies all over the floor  ...

Introductions Are Hard

Hello! I'm Grayce and this is my second time taking an online class with Laura! All of the information in my original introduction   is still pretty accurate, so feel free to check it out. Honestly, I'm pretty bad at talking about myself and it's just as hard while blogging 😅. This is my senior year at OU (finally!). Since I'm an older college student (25), I'm very excited to graduate. I will soon be able to start my career as an educator which is completely terrifying! Over my quarantine summer, I've been surrounding myself with plants. I have a tendency to kill things, but I've found a few varieties of houseplants (snake plant and marble pothos) that can withstand some abuse lol. If you have any gardening advice, or suggestions for plant names, let me know :)  My plant friends:  This is my Marble Queen Pothos (needs a name!) This is my Snake plant (Sansevieria), which is currently named Georgina (I'm open to renaming)  Image Information:  "Marb...
